Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez transfer for Tomorrowland Winter

How do I get from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez for Tomorrowland Winter?

Here is every option — private transfer, shuttle, rental car and public bus — with drive times, prices and our local tips.

Short answer: Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez is about 110 km and 1h45 by road. The easiest way for a group is a private transfer (from €390 per vehicle for up to 7 people with Squeed). Shuttles and buses are cheaper per person but slower, and a rental car means snow chains, hairpin bends and limited parking during the festival.

Every March, Tomorrowland Winter turns Alpe d'Huez into one of the most spectacular festivals in the Alps. The 2027 edition takes place from 20 to 27 March 2027. If you are flying in, Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB) is the closest airport to the resort — but it is still about 1h45 away by road, and the last part of the journey is the famous climb of 21 hairpin bends.

This guide explains how to get from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez for Tomorrowland Winter, and how to choose the right option for your group.

The route: Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez

Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport is not in Grenoble itself: it sits near Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 minutes north-west of the city. From there, the journey to Alpe d'Huez has three parts:

  1. Airport → Grenoble by motorway (about 45 minutes).
  2. Grenoble → Le Bourg-d'Oisans through the Romanche valley (about 45 minutes).
  3. Le Bourg-d'Oisans → Alpe d'Huez, up the 21 hairpin bends to 1,860 m (about 25 minutes).

In total, count around 1h45 in normal conditions. On Saturday 20 March, when thousands of festival-goers and skiers arrive at the same time, the valley road and the hairpin bends can be busy: allow 2h30 or more, especially in the afternoon or if it snows.

Option 1: Private transfer (the easiest for groups)

A private transfer is the most comfortable way to get from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez for Tomorrowland Winter. Your driver tracks your flight, waits for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, loads your luggage and drives your group directly to your apartment or hotel in the resort — no change, no waiting for other passengers.

  • Drive time: about 1h45, door to door.
  • Price with Squeed: from €390 per vehicle in a Mercedes V-Class for up to 7 people — around €56 per person for a full group.
  • Best for: groups of friends, late arrivals, travellers with lots of luggage, and anyone who wants to start the festival relaxed.

Bigger group? A Mercedes Sprinter takes 8 to 16 people, and coaches take up to 50. You can also book a private chauffeur for the whole festival week.

Option 2: Shared shuttle

Some companies run shared shuttles between Grenoble Airport and the Oisans ski resorts in winter, and Tomorrowland usually offers official travel packages that can include transport. Shuttles are cheaper per seat, but they follow fixed timetables, may stop in other villages and can leave you waiting at the airport if your flight is late. Check the official Tomorrowland website for its current travel options.

Option 3: Rental car

Renting a car at Grenoble Airport gives you freedom, but there are three things to know before choosing this option for Tomorrowland Winter:

  • Winter equipment is mandatory. Under the French Loi Montagne, cars in mountain areas must have winter tyres or carry snow chains or socks from 1 November to 31 March — the festival week is included (see Sécurité routière).
  • The 21 hairpin bends can be tricky in snow, especially at night after a long flight.
  • Parking in Alpe d'Huez is limited and often paid, and your car will stay parked all week while you are at the festival.

Option 4: Public transport

It is possible to reach Alpe d'Huez by public transport — airport bus to Grenoble, then a regional coach to the resort — but you will usually need a change in Grenoble, the journey takes much longer and timetables are limited. It is the cheapest option for solo travellers on a tight budget, but rarely practical with festival luggage.
